Third Grade
Language Arts
A basal reading program is supplemented with novels and historical fiction titles that are integrated with the Social Studies program. Monthly book reports incorporate genre studies as literature appreciation is emphasized. Literal comprehension skills are reinforced and students are introduced to inferential comprehension skills. Phonic skills are reinforced through a text-based spelling program. Students practice daily editing skills for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation through the Daily Oral Language (DOL) program and are introduced to editing for sentence structure. Journal prompts relate to a wide variety of themes as students respond to literature, current events, and life experiences.
Mathematics
Multiplication and division are introduced practiced. Multi-step and multi-operation problems present new challenges as students work with whole numbers, fractions, functions and elapsed time to solve problems. Students continue exploring concepts in geometry and working with data to create their own charts, graphs and tables.
Science
Life, earth and physical science concepts are explored in more detail as students carry out a variety of investigations. Science vocabulary becomes more technical and study strategies are introduced to ensure proper understanding and usage. Cooperative group work is emphasized as classmates complete experiments and demonstrations together. Reviewing the scientific method on a continual basis helps students apply the experimental process in their own science fair project.
Social Studies
Integrated with the reading program, Social Studies emphasizes history as students complete a thematic study of the past. Beginning with Caravans, an interactive unit, students practice and apply their knowledge of world geography to discover more about world cultures. Investigations into the Ages of Exploration, Discovery, and Invention help create an understanding of how the contributions of others from the past have affected students’ lives and the world they live in today.
Enrichment Curriculum
Art instruction focuses on elements of drawing and painting as students explore the use of lines, shapes, textures and other elements of art. An annual Art Fair encourages students to showcase a favorite piece.
Technology instruction is completely application based as third graders use MSWord, Excel, and PowerPoint to complete various projects. Students continue learning about and using the Library to enjoy reading and locate resources for personal interest and various classroom assignments.
Music incorporates singing, theory, and an introduction to a woodwind instrument. Students may audition for the 3rd/4th Grade Chorus. All students participate in a musical performance during the year.
Physical Education continues to encourage sportsmanship and fitness. Students participate in cooperative games, learn the fundamentals of various sports, and participate in the Presidential Fitness Award program. An annual Field Day celebrates fun competition with individual and group events.
Spanish is taught at two levels. Instruction is integrated with studies in vocabulary, grammar, geography, and culture. Units of study culminate with theme celebrations and projects.
