First Grade
Language Arts
A multi-volume reading program allows placement of students in appropriate level material for oral reading and comprehension skills practice in a small group setting. Additional supplements offer challenging application of developing reading skills. Weekly spelling lists begin with previously learned phonetic text and move to more complex sound combinations. Challenge vocabulary from science, social studies and current topics are added for enrichment. Continued practice of manuscript writing is done on grade-level handwriting paper and through the use of a handwriting text. Journaling topics become more diverse as students begin to respond to literature.
Mathematics
Mathematics emphasizes computation and application skills through problem-solving activities. Individual manipulative kits allow students to visualize concepts and reinforce learning. Students master facts to 10 and learn facts to 18 through initial practice and then weekly timed tests. Daily problem-solving practice exposes all students to critical thinking strategies. Students expand skills in using money, telling time and working with geometry and fractions as they also continue to broaden their mathematical vocabulary.
Science
A text-based program balanced with experiments, demonstrations, and other hands-on presentations make science an enjoyable experience. First graders are encouraged to ask questions and share knowledge. Students practice following the scientific method in group experiments which are displayed at the school’s annual Science Fair. Reading content material is practiced as a whole class activity, and students are introduced to studying for tests in a content subject.
Social Studies
Geography, community, citizenship, patriotism, and international cultures are all a part of the First Grade Social Studies program. Students are introduced to land and water regions on a map, moving from city to state, to country and world locations. International studies emphasize cultural traditions as each child celebrates a country of their origin with classmates.
Enrichment Curriculum
Art instruction focuses on elements of drawing and painting as students explore the use of lines, shapes, textures and other elements of art. An annual Art Fair encourages students to showcase a favorite piece.
Book Talks and occasional visits to online sites make Library a fun activity. Students learn to be responsible for books checked out and can apply their skills as readers.
Music incorporates singing, a basic introduction to theory, movement and listening, rhythm and rhyme, and a “tube” instrument. All students participate in a musical performance during the year.
Physical Education introduces sportsmanship and fitness. Students participate in cooperative games, learn the fundamentals of various sports, and participate in the Presidential Fitness Award program. An annual Field Day celebrates fun competition with individual and group events.
Spanish is taught at one level through games, role play, media, and musical activities. Vocabulary is explored through hands on materials and a basic introduction to reading and writing Spanish. Units of study culminate with theme celebrations.
